Verisyse Lens Surgery

Ophthalmologist & LASIK Surgeon Serving Chicago, Lombard & Naperville Areas Of Illinois

For people who have moderate to severe nearsightedness, LASIK is often not an option. Fortunately, for those who are not good candidates for LASIK, the Verisyse phakic IOL is a great option for when you are tired of dealing with the hassle of glasses or contacts.

To find out more about Verisyse or any of the eye surgery procedures available through our Chicago-area eye doctor, contact Foulkes Vision today to schedule a free consultation: 630-724-1400.

How Does the Verisyse Phakic IOL Differ from LASIK Surgery?

During LASIK surgery, laser energy is used to reshape the natural cornea of the eye so that incoming light can be better focused on the retina. There are limitations to how much the natural cornea can be changed. LASIK is very effective at treating low to moderate vision correction, but it is not recommended for patients with more extensive correction requirements.

Phakic IOLs like Verisyse are an alternative to LASIK and PRK eye surgeries. Lenses of this type can correct for more serious cases of myopia. In fact, the outcomes are often better than for LASIK correction.

The Verisyse Eye Surgery Procedure

Unlike LASIK surgery, there is no permanent change to the natural cornea. The Verisyse phakic IOL is attached to the iris, leaving the cornea unchanged. The Verisyse lens is available in different powers to suit the needs of each patient with myopia between -5 and -22 diopters. The Verisyse lens is placed in front of the iris, and can be removed if future vision correction needs change.

Who Is a Candidate for Verisyse?

  • Verisyse is FDA approved for patients between 21 and 60 years old
  • Patients who have sight loss from -5 to -22 diopters or from from +3 to +12 diopters
  • Patients with astigmatism not more than 2 diopters
  • Patients with no significant systemic disease
  • Patients with no other eye disease
  • Patients with vision that has been stable for at least 6 months
